It isn’t quite the end of emissions foul-ups just yet. Germany’s transport ministry said it has found an emissions control defeat device in a Fiat 500X, leading to a dispute with the Italian manufacturer, as reported by Automotive News Europe citing German magazine, Der Spiegel. Fiat denied that its vehicles were fitted with illegal emissions test cheating devices.
The ministry did not release details on its findings; however, it said the results will be sent to the European Commission. The exhaust treatment system on the Fiat 500X was found to switch off filtering after 90 minutes, citing results from a test conducted by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), which amounts to a defeat device, according to Der Spiegel.
Before that, an unspecified Fiat model was found to switch off its exhaust treatment system in 22 minutes, the German magazine said; the European emissions test cycle lasts 20 minutes. “We are not in a position to comment on the validity or accuracy of supposed KBA internal documents, or on purported emissions tests that we have never seen,” said a spokesperson for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
FCA added that the Fiat 500X conformed to rules “in all material respects to applicable emissions requirements,” adding that this has been verified and confirmed by the Italian ministry of transport, which of also the vehicle’s licensing authority. Last year, the German transport ministry asked the European Commission to investigate FCA for potentially illegal emissions control devices.
